Contributing to StateFrame
StateFrame Contributor License Agreement
Version 1.0. Effective October 27, 2026.
StateFrame is published under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0 only and under a commercial license from Farside Research LLC. This agreement gives Farside Research LLC the rights it needs to ship your contribution under both. You keep the copyright in your work.
This agreement follows the scope of the Apache Software Foundation's Individual and Corporate Contributor License Agreements, with an added commitment in section 5 to keep your work available under the AGPL.
How to sign: follow the instructions in CONTRIBUTING.md. You sign once, and the agreement covers all your future Contributions to StateFrame until you withdraw it for future Contributions by writing to Farside Research LLC.
Individual Contributor License Agreement
You ("you" or "the Contributor") accept these terms for every Contribution you submit to the StateFrame project. The project is maintained by Farside Research LLC, a West Virginia limited liability company ("Farside").
1. Definitions. "Contribution" means any original work of authorship, including changes to existing work, that you intentionally submit to Farside for inclusion in StateFrame, by any means, including pull requests, patches, issues or email. "Submit" means any electronic, verbal or written communication sent to Farside or to the project's repositories, issue trackers or mailing lists. Communication that you mark "Not a Contribution" is excluded.
2. You keep your copyright. This agreement is a license, not a transfer of ownership. You keep the copyright in your Contributions and remain free to use them for any other purpose.
3. Copyright license. You grant Farside, and its successors and assigns, a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable license to reproduce, prepare derivative works of, publicly display, publicly perform, sublicense and distribute your Contributions and such derivative works, under any license terms, including open-source and proprietary or commercial terms.
4. Patent license. You grant Farside, its successors and assigns, and every recipient of software that Farside distributes and that includes your Contribution, a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, irrevocable license to make, have made, use, sell, offer to sell, import and otherwise transfer your Contribution, under any patent claims you can license now or later that are necessarily infringed by your Contribution alone or by its combination with the work it was submitted to. If any entity brings patent litigation alleging that StateFrame or a Contribution infringes a patent, the patent licenses that you granted to that entity under this agreement end on the date the litigation is filed.
5. Farside's commitment. Farside, and any successor or assignee of the rights you grant here, will: 1. make every version of StateFrame, or of any work derived from it under any name, that it distributes and that includes your Contribution available to the public under the GNU Affero General Public License v3.0, with its complete corresponding source in the public project repository, no later than it makes that version available to anyone else, including commercial licensees; 2. never release a later version of StateFrame, or of any such derived work, under a source-available or other license that is not an open source license in place of the GNU Affero General Public License; and 3. never use the rights you grant here to offer your Contribution only under commercial or proprietary terms.
"Open source license" means a license approved by the Open Source Initiative. Two exceptions apply to 5.1: Farside may share a fix for a security vulnerability with affected parties under embargo for up to 30 days before publishing it under the GNU Affero General Public License, and it may share unreleased builds with its own employees, contractors and testers.
Farside may also offer those versions under a later version of the GNU Affero General Public License, and under commercial terms alongside the GNU Affero General Public License. Versions already released under the GNU Affero General Public License stay under it. This commitment binds Farside and any successor or assignee of Farside's rights under this agreement. The licenses in sections 3 and 4 may be assigned or otherwise transferred, including by merger or operation of law, only to a party that agrees in writing to be bound by this section 5; a transfer without that agreement conveys no rights under this agreement. This section does not bind licensees or sublicensees of StateFrame, including commercial licensees.
6. Your promises. You confirm that: 1. each Contribution is your original work, or you otherwise have the right to submit it under this agreement; 2. you have the legal authority to grant the licenses above; 3. if your employer or anyone else owns or has rights in the Contribution, that organization has signed the Corporate section below and lists you as a Designated Contributor; 4. you will clearly identify any part of a Contribution that is not your original work, including third-party code and code generated by an AI tool whose terms limit how it may be licensed, together with its source and license.
7. Work that is not yours. If you want to submit work that is not your original work, submit it separately from any Contribution, identify it as such, and state its source and license.
8. Moral rights. To the extent the law allows, you waive, or agree not to assert, any moral rights in your Contributions against Farside or recipients of StateFrame.
9. No warranty. You provide your Contributions "as is", without warranties or conditions of any kind, including warranties of title, non-infringement, merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose. You are not expected to provide support for your Contributions.
10. No obligation to use. Farside is not required to use, merge or distribute any Contribution.
11. Notice of changes. You agree to tell Farside if you learn of any fact that makes the promises in section 6 untrue.
12. Governing law. The laws of the State of West Virginia govern this agreement, without regard to its conflict of laws rules.

1. The organization ("the Corporation") accepts the Individual Agreement above for all Contributions submitted by the employees or contractors it lists below (its "Designated Contributors"), as if the Corporation itself were the Contributor. 2. The Corporation grants the copyright and patent licenses in sections 3 and 4 for those Contributions and makes the promises in section 6 on its own behalf. 3. The Corporation will update the list of Designated Contributors when it changes. Removing a person does not withdraw licenses already granted for their earlier Contributions.
