Commercial licensing

Open by default.
Licensed when you go closed.

Every Farside open-source project is free under the AGPL-3.0-only. When you want to ship it inside a closed product, or let customers use your modified version over a network without sharing its source, a commercial license removes the AGPL obligations. One flat price per company size, billed monthly or yearly.

At a glancePer company, covering every released engine. Yearly saves about two months; Enterprise is quoted yearly. Licensed by Farside Research LLC.

Do you need one?

Most people never pay, by design.

A short guide to which license fits. It is a summary, not legal advice, and the license texts govern.

  1. Free under the AGPL

    Learning, research, and open work

Use it, study it, change it, and share it. Personal projects, research, and open-source projects that share their code under the AGPL never pay.

    Example use cases

    • A student or researcher experimenting with it
    • Benchmarking it, or writing and teaching about it
    • An open-source project that ships its code under the AGPL
  2. Free under the AGPL

Running it unchanged on your own machines

Running an unmodified release for your own work does not ask you to publish anything. If you change it and let others use it over a network, the AGPL asks you to offer them your source.

    Example use cases

    • A developer running it on their own repositories at work
    • A team running the released version on company machines
    • Trying it out before deciding whether you need a license
  3. Commercial license

    Closed products and closed services

Ship a closed product that includes it, or let customers use your modified version over a network without offering them its source. One license covers your whole company. Changes you only run yourself can stay private under the AGPL.

    Example use cases

    • A closed-source product or app that ships with it inside
    • A hosted service that runs your modified version for customers
    • A client project you deliver without its source

    Talk to us

Every license includes

  • Use in closed-source products and internal tools, with no obligation to publish your changes
  • Every release shipped during your term, and the right to keep using them after it ends
  • Unlimited developers, machines, and deployments inside your company
  • Complete docs so your team can debug on its own

Enterprise adds

  • General-purpose agent products, OEM, and white-label rights for the engine itself, at any company size, priced for your use
  • IP indemnification, on terms set out in your order

The fine print, in plain words

Four rules. That is all.

  1. Headcount means everyone

Count employees, working owners, and contractors or outsourced staff who spend most of their time working for you, across your company and its affiliates. Not just engineers.

  2. One license, every released engine

A single license covers every engine we have already released, not just the one you came for. Engines still on the bench may ship on their own terms, so we do not promise them in advance.

  3. Monthly or yearly, self-certified

Pay monthly by card, or yearly by card or invoice. Yearly saves about two months. Tell us your headcount when you buy, and each renewal confirms you are still in your band. Cancel online any time and keep the license to the end of the month or year you paid for. A new band, or a switch between monthly and yearly, starts at your next renewal.

  4. We license the engines, not your project

A license covers our engines themselves. How you integrate, configure, and run them, and the software you build with them, are your team's responsibility. We do not take on implementation work, custom features, or one-off builds.

Manage or cancel a license online from Manage license. The licensing address for notices and cancellations is support@farsideresearch.com.

Licensing questions

Before you buy.

Why charge by headcount instead of per seat?

Seats turn every new hire into a procurement question. A flat band by company size is cheaper to administer for both sides, and it means a solo developer and a thousand-person company each pay a fair share.

Monthly or yearly?

Either. Monthly renews each month and is paid by card. Yearly saves about two months and can be paid by card or invoice. You can switch at your next renewal.

What happens when my license ends?

You keep the right to use every release that shipped during your paid terms, under the commercial terms. New releases stop with your last paid month or year; renewing gets you the releases that come after.

Do I need a license to evaluate it?

No. The AGPL lets you try it, build a prototype, and decide before you buy anything.

Can I contribute while holding a commercial license?

Yes. Contributions go through a contributor license agreement, which is what lets us keep offering both licenses.

Does a license include support?

No. A license buys rights to the engines, not help-desk time. Defects in the engines themselves are fixed in our regular releases. Your integration, your deployment, and the software you build with it are yours to run and fix, and every release ships with complete docs so your team can do that on its own.

Can I get a refund?

No. All sales are final and fees for a month or year are not refundable, except where the law requires. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep the license to the end of the period you paid for. The AGPL is your free trial: run the full engine, on your own work, for as long as you like before you buy.

Our company grew. Do we need to contact you?

No. Set your new band on Manage license any time before your renewal date and the renewal charges the right band. The fee for the period you already paid does not change.
